One person was sent to a hospital for precautionary measures after opening a letter containing an unknown powdery substance Tuesday morning at the DuPage County Courthouse. The substance proved not to be hazardous.
The suspicious letter was received about 7:30 a.m. in the mailroom of the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton, according to the DuPage County Sheriff’s office. A mail clerk opened a letter to find an unknown powdery substance inside.
Sheriff’s deputies secured the mailroom and the Wheaton Fire Department, sheriff’s HAZMAT personnel and FBI were called to the scene. Preliminary tests indicate the powdery substance is not volatile or harmful, but the mail clerk was taken to Central DuPage Hospital for screening, a release from the sheriff’s office said.
Sheriff’s detectives identified a suspect, who is now in the custody of U.S. Marshals, the release said.
No further information was immediately available.
