The Indian Head Park Village Board approved hiring up to three part-time police officers to make it easier for the Police Department to cover its daily patrols.
Village Administrator and Police Chief Frank Alonzo said one part-time officer quit over the summer. The department also has been short-staffed for more than a year because of officers being out on disability leave.
“We need to fill these slots,” Alonzo said.
He asked the Village Board for permission to hire one person, but was given leeway to hire up to three part-time officers.
The increase will not raise the department’s budget significantly, Alonzo said, because the new officers will not be guaranteed a minimum number of hours. They will be scheduled as needed to cover shifts when the regular staff is sick or on vacation.
The part-time officers are paid $22.47 an hour with no benefits. Most of them work as full-time police officers in other towns, Alonzo said.
