Lion newspaper lands national awards

LA GRANGE — Lyons Township High School’s student newspaper, Lion, accumulated an all-staff and several individual awards at the national high school journalism fall convention hosted by the Journalism Education Association and the National School Press Association.

Lion earned third place in the Best of Show Broadsheet 17 or more page category competition at the annual convention in San Antonio, Texas. Last year, the newspaper placed ninth in the same category.

In individual write-off competition at the convention, six of the senior students who attended placed in individual contests. In total 1,734 students entered various write-off contests, with 679 winning awards: 117 Superior, 209 Excellent and 353 Honorable Mention awards.

Honorable Mention in Editorial Writing — Malcolm Dunlop, senior from Western Springs

Honorable Mention in Feature Writing — MaryClare Flaherty, senior from LaGrange Park

Excellent in Review Writing — MaryCate Most, senior from LaGrange Park

Excellent in Advertising Design — Maggie O’Brien, senior from Western Springs

Honorable Mention in Online News Package — Ben Larson, senior from La Grange, and Lia Kass, senior from LaGrange Park.
