Area college students earn academic honors

Jacqueline Simon of La Grange earned bachelor’s degrees in biomedical engineering and mathematics in 2013 from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and is now studying biomechanics in graduate school at Rush University in Chicago. She was a National Merit Finalist as a student at Rosary High School.

During her senior year at Rose-Hulman, Simon assisted a team of biomedical engineering students in developing the iHorse Simulator, a mechanical, electrical and high-tech equine therapeutic device for persons needing physical rehabilitation from injuries or chronic illnesses. It features eight ribs that work in tandem to simulate the movement of a horse while walking, while controlled by a motor and complex series of bicycle chains. The simulated walking speed can be modified to best fit a patient’s needs. Simon joined two other students in working more than 1,500 hours on the project, which brought together all lessons learned from four years of courses at Rose-Hulman.
