Getting ready for the holidays means getting the kids ready too. Holiday cards, family portraits and parties all call for kids to look their best, but finagling some kids to even brush their hair can be a struggle.

Enter David Leon, an experienced hair stylist who just opened ABCuts exclusively for kids.

Gazing from the tall windows of his second-story salon, David Leon commented on how out of the two dozen places to get a hair cut in downtown Hinsdale, not one catered exclusively to children. That got the stylist-owner (and expectant father) thinking.

In mid-November, just in time for the prime picture-taking season, he unveiled the trendy kids-only hair salon at 7 E. First St.

Parents visiting the delicately chic space can request styles for their youngsters like “the buzz buzz” (a simple buzz cut) and “the pretzel” (braids). For a few dollars more, hip toddlers and tweens can complement their new cuts with temporary tattoos or stick-on earrings.

The young clients are also treated to a waiting area that doubles as a play space. Some hair stations are styled as airplane and fire truck booster seats.

“It makes them feel like it’s their place,” Leon said.

While boys and girls get their tresses trimmed, moms and dads can peruse the salon’s adjacent boutique, Ashley’s Pure Beauty, which features a blow-dry bar for a no-hassle shampoo and style.

Amanda Bach of Addison said she wanted her 17-month-old son Seth to sport a more clean-cut look for the holidays. Naturally, she turned to Leon, her go-to hair stylist for the past seven years.

“There’s no one else that I trust,” she said.

For holiday hairstyles, Leon said a classic short bob is both a timeless and kid-friendly do. Ringlets and bangs – including side-swept wisps on boys – add another layer of cuteness to family photo shoots.
