Yoga class at the Morton Grove Park District's Prairie View Community Center in Morton Grove Thursday Dec. 27, 2012. | James C. Svehla~for Sun-Times Media

BURR RIDGE – Thank you to The Doings for the opportunity to let more people learn more about Bikram Yoga The REAL Hot Yoga and under stand the world of yoga! We at Bikram Yoga are so excited to share our thoughts and yoga practices with you.

We thought we'd start our first article out with a fun look at Bikram Yoga.

Bikram yoga is a series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises over 90 minutes in a studio heated to 105 degrees.  Sounds like we would need a nap in the middle of the workout, right?  Isn’t that what Savasana or Dead Man’s Body is?

Savasana, the thirteenth posture in the Bikram yoga series, is, in fact, the most important posture in Hatha yoga. The name means corpse pose due to the complete stillness. To practice, lie flat on your back with your feet facing the back of the room.  Arms at your side with your palms facing upward. Feet relaxed with your heels together and your toes fall out. Eyes open and breathe normal (in and out of your nose). Maintain total stillness.  Don't Move.  Relax and breathe.

Whoever said “No Pain, No Gain” did not practice Savasana. Savasana accelerates the compression and release cycle when the internal organs are deprived of oxygen and then flooded with it. The high speed cleansing flushes out toxins, free radicals and other debris. It is how we gain energy through our yoga practice. Plus it teaches relaxation and stillness and our hectic, fast paced world.

It’s summer.  School is out.  Kids are crazy. Practice some Savasana at Bikram Yoga Burr Ridge, located at 145 Tower Drive. For more information, or class times call 630-590-5020.

Namaste.
