With this late summer heat wave in Chicago and all the Bikram yoga we are practicing, water is so important. It is best to come into the hot room already hydrated. Do not try to hydrate in the hot room, as it takes about 45 minutes for the body to properly process water. Ideally, water in the studio should be for refreshment only. You should need no more than little sips in between every 3 or 4 postures. Having too much water is uncomfortable and could actually hinder your yoga practice.
So how do you hydrate? You drink when you are thirsty, right? WRONG! You should drink on a schedule, not for thirst, to ensure you are properly hydrated. Most of us have become accustomed to dehydration and are no longer attuned to feelings of thirst. In fact we often mistake feelings of thirst for hunger and overeat. Signs of dehydration are tiredness, dizziness, not sweating enough and muscle cramping. A good rule is body weight X 0.7 = # ounces one should drink a day on average. If your activity level is up, you should drink more.
The more water you drink, and the more you sweat, the more important it is to replenish your electrolytes! Water alone cannot keep you hydrated with Bikram yoga. Electrolytes are essential. Electrolytes are charged molecules that become active in water. They conduct electricity in the body and are instrumental for transmitting signals, regulating, muscle contraction, heart rate, balance of body fluid and pH levels. The body needs the right balance of water and electrolytes for communication signals to be sent throughout the body. Coconut water and Emergen-C are two popular and effective sources of electrolytes. In addition to electrolytes try to eat foods high in water, such as, fruits and vegetables, and try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, and starches as they are dehydrating.
