It is in our nature to hear challenge and begin to stand a little taller, flex our muscles a little harder. Seriously, who doesn’t enjoy a challenge every now and then?! Lucky for all our yogis, Bikram Yoga Burr Ridge offers an October 30 Day Challenge. This 30 Day Challenge can also be done on your own by challenging yourself to get in 30 yoga workouts anywhere you'd like! Get ready to challenge your body and mind.
The Bikram Yoga series was created to move through all the muscles, joints, and systems of the body to systematically open up and speed healing to all areas of the body. Today too many of us suffer from high stress lifestyles, resulting in heart problems, diabetes, back pain, obesity, sinus problems, sleep disorders and depression just to name a few.
A regular practice of Bikram Yoga results in a wide range of benefits: stress reduction, weight loss, improved muscle tone, reduced pain and stiffness, better digestion and increased energy. Doing the 30 Day Bikram Yoga Challenge, of just 30 days of yoga, is a great way to feel the potential of this powerful practice. The Challenge is a commitment of time, body and mind, but it is also a gift to yourself and to those around you.
As founder Bikram Choudhury once said, “Give me 30 days, I’ll change your body. Give me 60 days, I’ll change your life!” In order to achieve peace of mind, one needs to start with the body to relieve pain, disease and chronic illnesses. By using the body as a medium, we let the mind rest and come closer to knowing ourselves. Within the first week, most likely you will have the sequence down well enough to start detaching from your movements and quiet your mind. The routine takes over and true meditation is possible. A consistent yoga practice allows us to align our inner and outer bodies so that we can achieve optimum health.
Three key factors of practicing Bikram yoga are frequency, precision, and intensity. In the practice, we repeat each posture and complete the same 26 posture series. You may be thinking doesn’t the routine get old, but knowing which posture is coming next allows you to focus exclusively on the positioning of the body. Not to mention the more you get used to the order, the more second nature class becomes, allowing you to listen to your body and be more precise with movements. By doing the practice daily, you will be able to gain flexibility, strength and medical benefits of the postures sooner, rather than just practicing a few times a week. With a consistent and careful practice, you will be able to use more strength to go deeper.
While the dialogue and postures are the same, each class is going to be different. Sometimes you will feel great. Sometimes you will feel terrible. Sometimes certain postures will come easily and you can feel yourself improving and getting stronger. Sometimes you cannot do a posture you perfected the day before. You have to take the good with the bad. Leaving all expectations at the door as you enter the hot room and just trying your best, the more accomplished you will feel after those 90 minutes. Yoga is about accepting your capabilities as they are that day, in that moment. Life cannot always be controlled, both inside and outside the yoga studio. Remember it is called a challenge for a reason. Just take it one step, one class at a time.
