In the coming weeks we will be getting to know some of the outstanding students at Nazareth Academy. This week we two student-athletes excelling in hockey.
Seniors Patrick Boniecki of Darien and Blake Gordon of Westchester are the heart of Nazareth Academy’s hockey team as the Captain and Assistant Captain. According to Coach Derek Gordon, “both of these seniors have been an instrumental part of the hockey program all four years because they are dedicated and fully committed to the team.” Patrick and Blake recently played in the IHSHL Suburban Division All-Conference All-Star Game.
Q: How long have you been playing your sport? What position?
PB - I started my first learn-to-skate program when I was 2 ½ years old and I made my first hockey team when I was 3. I started off playing hockey at the center position, but currently I am a defenseman.
BG - I have been playing hockey since I was three years old. I started as a center and I still play the position today.
Q: What got you into sports initially?
PB - I got interested in hockey after hearing the stories of my dad growing up on the south side of Chicago and playing pond hockey with his neighbor, Chris Chelios; but it was not until after my dad took me to my first Blackhawks game, that I knew that I wanted to play hockey for the rest of my life.
BG - My whole family has played the game of hockey; hearing all their stories about how fun hockey is to play really got me wanting to play when I was a child.
Q: What other sports do you play? Which is your favorite?
PB - I do not play any other sports because hockey is the only sport that I need.
BG - I have also played baseball since I was 3 years old. Picking which sport I like best is too hard so both are my favorite. It depends on what season it is.
Q: What is your favorite sports team?
PB - Chicago Blackhawks
BG - Chicago Blackhawks
Q: What other activities are you involved with at Nazareth?
PB - I am currently involved in Youth Initiative and the Environmental Advocates.
BG - I am part of the Roadrunner Club, Youth Initiative and a member of the Varsity Baseball team.
Q: Do you plan on playing college sports? Where are you considering?
PB - I will be attending The Ohio State University and it is my goal to try out and make their club hockey team.
BG - I hope to play hockey or baseball in college. I am still undecided, but considering Illinois State, Lewis University, North Central College and a couple more universities.
Q: What tips would you offer someone trying to get into your sport(s)?
PB - Hockey is a sport that requires a lot of time and dedication. You have to be prepared to spend a lot of your time at the ice rink and with your teammates. In order to become the best possible athlete, you need to constantly work at perfecting the basic skills before you can move on to the next step.
BG - Start at a young age and really focus on skating because that is what is most important in hockey.
Q: What do you like to do on the weekends?
PB - My weekends usually consist of either hanging out with my friends or going to hockey practices or games.
BG - When I don’t have games I like to spend time with my friends and family.
