HINSDALE – Hinsdale’s Wellness House celebrated surviving and survivors beneath glittering crystal chandeliers in the Grand Ballroom of the InterContinental Hotel in Chicago at their 2013 Wellness House Ball on Oct. 19.
More than 300 people attended “ A Night in the Piazza,” which started with cocktails and a silent auction on the balcony overlooking the ballroom.
Attendees praised the services provided by Wellness House, including Hinsdale resident and cancer survivor Pat Janik, who proclaimed with a smile, “I shouldn’t be here!”
In addition to a silent auction, a lively live auction got the crowd animated. A 12-seat box for a Blackhawks game, including food and parking passes, raised $7000 and a much-coveted 8-day trip to Peru raised $8000.
Following the live auction, a video program created by Hinsdale resident Sara Klepacki moved attendees with the story of Santino Chiapetta, who overcame brain cancer and utilized Wellness House services like counseling, yoga and nutrition classes.
The event raised approximately $340,000, which goes towards the free programs run by Wellness House. According to Susanna Decker, directory of philanthropy, Wellness House is supported by “100% private dollars.” The money raised at the ball helps to offset their $2 million annual budget.
