Keep busy over break in Burr Ridge

BURR RIDGE — The days between Christmas and New Year’s can be long, and not because of the solstice.
Much of the world grinds to a halt in the days between Christmas and the return to school, but not the Indian Prairie Public Library.
“We have lots of activities going on,” said Sarah Joynt, youth librarian at the Darien library, which also serves Willowbrook and Burr Ridge.
Teens and pre-teens from seventh to 12th grade are invited to a showing of “The Amazing Spiderman” at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Younger kids and their families will enjoy Dr. Seuss cartoons at 2 p.m. on Jan. 3. Free popcorn will be served at both events and there’s no need to register.
Things get creative on Jan. 4, when third- through sixth-graders are invited to Origami Yoda, an event patterned after the popular book, The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, by Tom Angleburger.
“It’s a book on the Caudill list for this year,” Joynt said.
In fact, Angleburger’s books would be a good choice for anyone looking for an enjoyable, if not a bit quirky, read over winter break.
Those who attend Origami Yoda, at 2 p.m. in the meeting room, will create Yoda and other characters from paper.

The library also has a huge collection of video games for many game systems and movies, all available for checkout.
“Or you can just hang out and read,” Joynt said.
The library, at 401 Plainfield Road, is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The library will be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
Get a move on
Cabin fever can set in pretty quickly, but Pleasant Dale Park District can offer some relief.
On Jan. 3, parents can bring their young children to expend some energy at Litte Tikes Time. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., the Pleasant Dale gymnasium will be filled with toys, play equipment and a bounce house. Admission is $2 for residents and $3 for nonresidents.
“They have a real good time,” Park District Director Katherine Parker said.
There’s a benefit for parents, too.
“It gets them tired for naps,” Parker said.
