Volunteers spruce up Salt Creek

Salt Creek’s natural beauty is showing a bit more as it winds through Western Springs and LaGrange Park, thanks to volunteer cleanup efforts Saturday. On shore and in canoes, a crew of about 60 donned hip waders or old sneakers and gloves to gather trash stashed along the creek banks and bike path meandering through several Cook County Forest Preserves. “The early warm weather this spring caused quite a bit of weed growth so it was harder to see some of the garbage,” said Stan Zarnowiecki of La Grange, one of the organizers from the Salt Creek Watershed Network. The Illinois High School Association girls state track and field meet will be held this weekend — and Fenwick’s Mary Kate Callahan won’t be taking part. But a lawsuit to be filed Wednesday by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan in federal court aims to make it possible for student-athletes with disabilities, like Callahan who is paralyzed from the waist down, to compete in future IHSA state meets.

New seminary rector named

Father Robert Barron, who was the host of a television documentary series on Catholicism that aired nationwide, has been appointed as the new rector/president of the University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary. Francis Cardinal George announced the appointment of Barron to the position. Barron will assume his new role as rector in July. “I love the seminary,” said Barron, 52. “It’s a place I know well and I’ve been there for many years. “I believe very strongly in the priesthood and the importance of it.” Barron has been associated with Mundelein Seminary since the 1980s when he …

Dik Drugs joins Cardinal Health team

Ohio-based Cardinal Health has signed an agreement to add Burr Ridge-based Dik Drugs to its worldwide system of pharmaceutical distribution centers. A family-owned company since 1914, Dik Drugs serves 500 independent pharmacies. Cardinal spokeswoman Tara Schumacher said Dik Drugs fits well into Cardinal’s growth plan. “Growing our base of independent pharmacies is a key aspect to our company’s growth,” as is increasing the company’s sales of generic drugs, Schumacher said. She said independent pharmacies, such as ones served by Dik Drugs, tend to purchase generics. Burr Ridge promotes police

Two members of the Burr Ridge Police Department moved up the ranks this week, thanks to promotions announced by Police Chief John Madden. Cpl. Luke Vulpo, a 17-year veteran of the department, moves to the rank of sergeant to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Sgt. Bryan DeYoung. Officer Ryan Husarik steps into the rank of corporal.
