OAK BROOK — Spring and summer mean the start of local road improvement and other infrastructure projects. In Oak Brook, West Shore Pipe Line Company will be completing maintenance construction activities on the east leg of 22nd Street at Illinois 83. The work was scheduled to start the evening of May 28 and is anticipated to last about three weeks between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The north westbound through lane along 22nd Street will be closed for the duration of the project. Fullersburg Woods hikes are for the birds

OAK BROOK — Chris Wolek was very glad he decided to join his fiancé Friday. Both Wolek and his fiancé, Gosia Lukasik, were at Fullersburg Woods by 7:15 a.m. to participate in one of the 10 FullersBird Fridays spring sessions. The hikes, led by Keriann Dubina, a naturalist who works for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, offer opportunities to see how the diversity of birds changes in the forest preserve. Hinsdale Central students take chemistry field (& stream) trip

HINSDALE — Students from Hinsdale Central High School pulled bluegill, minnows and bass out of Salt Creek May 20. They weren’t fishing, they were on a chemistry field trip. The students were studying the health of the Salt Creek watershed at the Graue Mill in Oak Brook, part of a unit on water in a chemistry themes course taught by James Paige, Tom Ludovice and Julie Baker. The students collect a wide variety of data, including the depth, flow and temperature of the water, the variety of insects, fish and vegetation, and the amount of dissolved oxygen, nitrates and phosphates …

HINSDALE — Technology now plays a major role in our day-to-day lives, bringing a host of time-saving benefits, but also a few drawbacks for our youth. Research shows too much screen time can result in a decline in academic performance, a lack of social skills, and an increase in pediatric health issues. WILLOWBROOK— Steven Nawas isn’t about to let himself become a statistic. “Kids forget 70 percent of what they learned in school over the summer,” the Gower West third-grader said. He is one of at least 77 Gower District 62 students who will keep their classroom skills sharp by taking part in virtual summer school over summer break. Unlike regular summer school, Gower’s virtual program, now in its third year, allows students to keep up with and even improve their skills between June and August.
