DARIEN — When the Hinsdale South Class of 2013 gathers for commencement May 31, the voices of classmates Maura Carr and Nicole Blumenstein will be heard, in more ways than one. Carr and Blumenstein were chosen to speak at the ceremony — Carr as the evening’s emcee and Blumenstein as the student orator. The two friends, both members of the Madrigal Singers, also teamed up to arrange the song that the group will perform as part of the program. Lyons Township staff member learns on Southeast Asian island

LA GRANGE — Lyons Township High School staff member Michelle Wrona of Darien will study primate conservation strategies on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo. Wrona was selected to participate in summer 2013 global graduate studies as part of Miami University and Project Dragonfly’s Earth Expeditions Program. The graduate courses from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly are based on Earth Expeditions, which has engaged more than 1,400 people since 2004 in firsthand educational and scientific research at key conservation sites in Africa, Australia, Asia and the Americas. HINSDALE — Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Elementary District 181 PTOs are hosting a districtwide family golf outing on June 3 and July 8, at the Chicago Highlands Club. A portion of each golfer’s registration will be donated to District 181 schools. Attendees can register for golf individually or with up to three partners. In addition to golfing, pool passes for the Chicago Highlands Club facility are available on both days for golfers’ families. Ten members of the Lyons Township High School Business Professionals of America recently competed in the annual National BPA Leadership Conference contests and performed in a variety of categories, including Administrative Support Team, Advanced Office Systems and Procedures, Banking and Finance, Database Applications, Digital Media Production, Fundamentals of Web Design and Small Business Management Team. WILLOWBROOK— Steven Nawas isn’t about to let himself become a statistic. “Kids forget 70 percent of what they learned in school over the summer,” the Gower West third-grader said. He is one of at least 77 Gower District 62 students who will keep their classroom skills sharp by taking part in virtual summer school over summer break. Kesman and Paulsen return to Hinsdale Central as interim principals

HINSDALE — Two retired principals are returning to Hinsdale Central High School as interim leaders. The Hinsdale High School District 86 Board approved hiring Tom Paulsen and Frank Kesman as interim principals for next school year. They will be paid $80,000 each for 100 days of work. Principal Michael McGrory announced last month he has accepted a position as a high school principal in Iowa, his home state. A national search for a permanent replacement for McGrory will start in the fall, Superintendent Nicholas Wahl said. LA GRANGE — A dispute between two school boards over financial control continues to fester. A legislative solution still isn’t in sight, state Rep. Jim Durkin reported May 20 to the Lyons Township High School Board in its effort to separate from the Lyons Township School Treasurer’s Office. Hinsdale District 86 votes to rebid summer construction projects

HINSDALE — The Hinsdale High School District 86 Board voted Monday to cancel contracts for summer construction projects. The decision could result in cancelation fees of $17,000 to the construction firm Gilbane Inc. and $12,000 to their contractors. The board voted 4-3 to cancel the contracts for all but the safety ladders and railings for rooftop equipment at Hinsdale South. Newly elected Victor Casini, Ed Corcoran and Claudia Manley were joined by board member Richard Skoda in voting to cancel the contracts the board approved in April. HINSDALE — Don’t try to convince Surina and Yaash Iyengar that carrots are icky. The Oak School first- and second-grader are winners of the kids’ chef competition, held as part of Hooray for Health, a healthy eating event at Oak School May 16. The siblings found a tasty way to eat their veggies when they created Healthy Banana Carrot Chocolate Chip Bread. As the winning recipe, the veggie-inspired dessert is on the menu this week at Topaz in Burr Ridge. HINSDALE — On a day when some Hinsdale Middle School students received their prize for successful fundraising for one cause, more students walked to raise money for another cause. The team from Hinsdale Middle School raised the most money among District 181 schools in the Walk for Autism April 28. Lyons Township High School office of community relations administrative assistant Sally Kapso recently received an Award of Excellence from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association’s Distinguished Service Awards. College of DuPage officials look at budget with $2.5 million deficit

The College of DuPage Board got its first look at the proposed 2014 budget May 16. While the college’s financial rating is good, challenges loom in the immediate future, challenges that may lead to an increase in tuition. At the core of the college’s potential problems is the failure of the state of Illinois to deliver on funding education, college officials said. “The state continues to be a significant challenge to the college,” said Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of finance and administration.
