Being a defending state champion makes Lyons sophomore Emma Haugen nervous. It’s a title she can’t avoid, however, heading into the state meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois in Charleston, where she won the high jump as a freshman. “I try not to think about that,” Haugen said. “I just want to do my best.” A year after qualifying for state in four events, Haugen duplicated the remarkable performance at the Class 3A Lyons Sectional Friday. LINCOLNSHIRE — There might not be any high school team in any sport in the state of Illinois more synonymous with winning than Fenwick boys water polo. From 1999 to 2011, the Friars won 11 state titles. CHARLESTON — Saturday’s Class 3A girls track and field state final was full of firsts for New Trier’s 4x800-meter relay. It was the first time this season that senior all-state runners Courtney Ackerman and Jessica Ackerman had run on the same 4x800 relay. Courtney Ackerman decided she felt healthy enough after Friday’s state preliminaries to run in two races on Saturday.
