In high school, Mia Tritch competed in the unusual combination of gymnastics and tennis.
Her focus was primarly on gymnastics while growing up in Warren, Mich., but Tritch also had a love for tennis. That passion developed while playing tennis every Sunday with her father, Ted Carl.
“My father was a huge tennis player,” Tritch recalled. “Every weekend, on Sundays, I would go out and play with my dad.”
After graduating from Michigan State and earning her master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, Tritch rekindled her love for tennis as an assistant girls coach at Hinsdale South.
Now Tritch will take over her own program. She was named the new boys tennis coach at Hinsdale South a few weeks ago, and replaces Kurt Vonnahme, who stepped down after becoming a dean at Hinsdale Central.
Tritch’s first meet as coach will be March 24 when the Hornets host a season-opening quadrangular.
“I definitely wanted to be a head coach,” Tritch said. “It’s something new. It’s something different. I love tennis.”
Tritch, 28, is a physical education teacher at Hinsdale South and coached girls for two years. She has never coached boys before.
“So far, the boys I have met have been wonderful,” Tritch said. “They are a great group of kids.”
