Hinsdale Central dominated the Lyons Township Sectional and had its two top singles and doubles teams playing against each other for championships on Saturday.
“This was so much different than playing against (Martin Joyce) in practice,” the Red Devils’ Sam Bloom said. “Every shot was more important and it was definitely tighter.”
Bloom took on Joyce for the singles championship and beat his teammate 7-5, 6-0 to capture the title. Joyce, who is a freshman, defeated Bloom earlier in the year but appreciated the fact that Bloom has been there for him all year.
“It helps a lot to play against one of the top guys in state every day,” Joyce said. “My game has gotten better and better. Today was fun because we were in it for the team aspect too.”
Joyce defeated Jake Elliot of Lyons Township 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals and Bloom advanced to the finals by defeating Alex Ross of LT 6-2, 6-1.
Youth ruled the day in the doubles championship as the Hinsdale Central team of Michael Lorenzini and Chase Hamilton upset teammates Peter Heneghan and Alex Hagermoser to win the championship 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2). It was only the second loss of the year for Heneghan and Hagermoser.
Lorenzini is a freshman and Hamilton is a sophomore. The duo have played against Heneghan and Hagermoser in practice and until the sectional championship have never defeated the senior pair.
“Our chemistry together is a lot better than it was at the beginning of the year,” Hamilton said. “They are really good and will probably compete for the state championship. We would like to be there to play them for it.”
“We stayed consistent,” Lorenzini said. “We played a lot of sets together and that has helped us improve as a doubles team.”
