ADDISON — After taking care of business Friday in Addison, thrashing Addison Trail 42-14 to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2001, Hinsdale South Hornets were ready to confront their next challenge:
Finding a date for the homecoming dance on Saturday.
Players sent teammates during halftime on reconnaissance missions to the cheerleading squad, to test the waters as the clock continued to count down to D(ate)-Day.
“That’s just not right,” said senior wide receiver Justin Ward, when told of the strategy.
Ward, who clicked on 6-of-6 PAT kicks, pulled in his first touchdown reception of the season, a 29-yard pass from quarterback DJ Deolitsis that gave the visitors a 28-7 advantage at the half.
While Deolitsis ran in for three first-half scores to give him nine on the season, his strike to Ward was just his second TD pass.
“Just taking what they give us,” the quarterback said. “We’ve been setting teams up with the run.”
Ward said he wasn’t surprised that he got the opportunity to score. Twice this season he had touchdowns wiped out when referees ruled he was out of bounds. But on Friday he displayed nimble footwork down the sideline that surely will make his dance partner happy.
“Just from years playing football,” he shrugged of his show of balance.
“We practiced that play all week. We knew (Addison Trail) would press us and that would open up the pass. All week long, coach has been saying, ‘ Ward, you’re going to get open.’ ”
Ward has made a bigger contribution this season with his leg. When he separated his shoulder in June, the only thing he could work on was his kicking. He spent time at kicking camps, but believes there is a college future in store as a wide receiver.
As for homecoming, he admitted he’s all set. He already got a commitment from volleyball player Sharon Anderson.
“We’re just friends,” he quickly noted.
Deolitsis also revealed that he will be taking his girlfriend of two years, thereby erasing one possible distraction heading into Friday’s (7:30 p.m.) game against Leyden (3-1, 2-0)in a showdown between Gold unbeatens.
During the postgame huddle in the north end zone, head coach Mike Barry warned the team about the distractions of homecoming week. Enjoy themselves, but be prepared on Friday.
The second-year coach, who has his team on track for its first playoff appearance in seven years, said none of the players have asked for tips on how to snare a homecoming date.
“They know better,” he said, “because I’d tell them to be focused. Be focused on the game. They know better than to ask me advice.”
