HINSDALE

Hinsdale Central standout wide receiver Ian Bunting will miss at least the next two weeks after injuring his right ankle Friday night in a 24-20 victory at Lyons.

The 6-foot-6, 196-pound junior injured the ankle after catching his only pass in the game for 24 yards on the third place from scrimmage. He did not return to the game and left the field afterward on crutches.

“After I caught the ball and was running downfield, I stiff-armed one kid,” Bunting said. “Someone else came from behind me.”

Bunting, a Division I prospect, will miss Saturday’s Doings Cup game against Hinsdale South (4-1) in Hinsdale and will likely miss the Red Devils’ (4-1) game at Oak Park-River Forest (3-2) Oct. 5.

Bunting said he had X-rays over the weekend, but has not undergone an MRI exam.

“The doctor would not say (the diagnosis),” Bunting said. “It’s either a strain or a minor hairline fracture.”

Bunting said he has a follow-up appointment scheduled for next week.

His doctor said he expects to make a full recovery, Bunting said.

After Friday’s game, Bunting traveled to Champaign Saturday to make an unofficial visit during the Illini’s loss to Louisiana Tech. Bunting has already visited Northwestern and Michigan State in the past few weeks. He expects to visit Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin next month.

Bunting leads Hinsdale Central in receiving yards with 412 on 16 catches this season. Both Bunting and senior John Claussen (18-286 yards) have four touchdown catches this season. ~.
