BERWYN — Hinsdale South used a punishing ground attack to take the lead against West Suburban Gold foe Morton Friday night, and then put the game in the hands of its defense in the final minutes.

The Hornet defense was up to the task, holding off Morton twice in their territory in the last four minutes to preserve a 28-21 victory in Berwyn.

The Mustangs had three chances from the 1-yard line with just over three minutes left, but could not score when a third-down fumble was recovered by Hinsdale South’s Lironn Downing.

Morton (2-5, 1-4) had one more chance after a Hornets punt, but could not take advantage and gave the ball over on downs with 1:40 left.

Hinsdale South (5-2, 3-1) struggled early and trailed 14-0 after Mustangs quarterback Emilio Engle tossed two touchdowns to Jonathan Duarte in the second quarter.

Arian Tony responded for the Hornets, capping off a three-play drive with a 31-yard scoring run midway through the second quarter. Tony continued to have success in the second half, leading all rushers with 221 yards on 32 carries.

“Morton is a physical football team,” said Hornets coach Michael Barry. “It took a couple of series to figure out what they were doing defensively. They were putting a lot of guys up in the box, which you do not always want to run on, but on a night like tonight where it is a little cold and windy, some of the passes were not falling where we wanted them to fall.”

While Hinsdale South’s air attack was grounded for most of the night, quarterback DJ Deolitsis also had success running the ball. He gained 110 yards on 13 carries, while rushing for three scores in the second half.

He broke a 21-21 tie with a 69-yard TD scamper with just under nine minutes gone in the final period.

Next week the Hornets look to clinch a playoff berth when Downers Grove South pays a visit, while Morton travels to face Oak Park-River Forest.
