WEST CHICAGO — The toughest part for Class 3A West Chicago Regional medalist David Whinery of Hinsdale Central Tuesday is coming back on Monday to play St. Andrews again at the St. Charles East Sectional.

Whinery shot a 1-over-par 72 to win by one stroke over Lyons junior Dan Hudson. The Red Devils placed their four scorers in the top eight to upset West Suburban Silver champion Lyons 300-303 for the regional championship. Hinsdale Central beat Lyons for the second time in seven invites this season and claimed its sixth regional title in seven years after missing out last year. The Devils have won seven regional titles in school history.

Both conference powers return to play the same St. Andrews Course No. 1 for the sectional at 9 a.m. Monday.

“It’s strange,” Whinery said about playing the same course twice in the postseason. “I almost think it’s a negative. I have to live up to what I shot today. You never want a number in your head. This number (72) will stick out for me.”

The Devils received a boost from junior Tom Olson (75), who shot his lowest 18-hole score of the season to tie for third place. Olson made an eagle on the 503-yard, par-5 No. 10 when he hit a 4-iron 210 yards and then chipped in from the fringe. Olson had double bogeys on two of his last six holes.

“It felt really good,” Olson said. “My shots hit solid. Everything felt together. It was a matter of time (shooting low).”

Regional runner-up Dan Hudson of Lyons (73) made bogey on the par-4 18th when his approach landed near a practice green next to the green. He took a wedge to chip over a wooden fence and a cart path and landed his ball near the fringe.

“When I hit it, I yelled (to myself), ‘Be good,’ ” Hudson said. “It was 20 yards long. It was similar to another shot I had on No. 9.”

Hudson recalled last year when Lyons finished second in state after placing third in the Bartlett Sectional behind Naperville North and Hinsdale Central.

“We don’t care. As long as I see that we are 1-2 or 3 (in the regional), it’s like being No. 1 for us,” Hudson said.
