WEST CHICAGO — Familiar names filled the top of the leaderboard Monday at the Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional.

Hinsdale Central (301) defeated Naperville North by one stroke to take the sectional team title in a switch of finishes from last year when the Huskies beat Hinsdale. For the second consecutive year, Lyons (304) placed third in a sectional. Last year the Lions when on to place second at state.

The Devils placed their three top scorers in the top 10, led by sophomore Brian Dolehide and freshman Kenneth Li with 74s to tie for third place. Senior David Whinery (75) tied for eighth.

Hinsdale won its fifth sectional title in seven years and its 10th overall. Whinery, Tom Olson and Jeff Yoo qualified for their second consecutive state meets. Hinsdale has reached state 11 times in the last 12 years.

The state meet begins Friday at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

“We especially beat our rivals (from Lyons),” Whinery said. “This year, we’ve seen them a lot. It’s pretty big to beat them two times in a row. It’s a nice stretch.”

Hinsdale also topped Lyons Oct. 2 to win the West Chicago Regional at the same St. Andrews course in West Chicago. The season series in tournaments between the West Suburban Silver rivals is 5-3, in favor of Lyons.

Iowa-bound Raymond Knoll of Naperville North, the state Junior Amateur champion over the summer, was the medalist after firing a 3-under-par 68 at St. Andrews’ No. 1 course to beat Naperville Central senior Peter Mandich (73).

“It was my best round of the year,” Knoll said. “I know I had to shoot low. I had that mentality. To do it means everything to me.”

Playing St. Andrews in back-to-back tournaments helped Dolehide, who shot a 77 at the regional. He switched putters for the sectional, keeping his Scotty Cameron at home and switching to a TaylorMade Ghost.

“I already know the course a lot,” Dolehide said. “My putting was really nice. It was really good. I wanted to switch putters from last week.”

The start of the sectional was delayed around an hour due to morning frost and windy conditions that made it a different course than the previous week. Pin placements were also changed from the regional setup.

“I was hoping to duplicate what they did last Tuesday (at the regional),” Devils coach Jess Krueger said. “We were within one stroke. I can’t be any happier. That’s all anyone could ask for.”

Lyons senior Ryan Hudson was among five players tied for third with a 74, along with St. Charles North’s Dan Shepherd and Hinsdale South junior Brian Strumillo.

“My putter was a hot as it could be,” said Hudson, who shot a 77 at St. Andrews last week. “This was the best putting round of my high school golf career.”

Strumillo qualified for his first state meet.

“It’s a good feeling,” Strumillo said. “I wanted to go downstate. I thought I had a good shot. I like the course. I putted really well.”
