College roundup: Uhren advances to national championship

Skokie native and Oakton Community College runner Steve Uhren placed 16th in the Calumet City Half Marathon on Sept. 23 with a time of 1:35:47. With the performance, the East Leyden High School graduate qualified for the NJCAA Half Marathon National Championship on Nov. 17 in Levelland, Texas.
- Lake Zurich High School alumni Eric and John Pothast and their Marquette men’s soccer team, ranked No. 9/7 at the time, upset No. 2/2 Connecticut 3-2 on Oct. 6 in Milwaukee. The win improved the Golden Eagles to 11-0, including 3-0 in the Big East.
Eric, a junior midfielder and co-captain, has started in all 11 of games. He has eight points on the season, including three game-winning goals, which is tied for the team lead.
John, a freshman defender, also has started every match and has recorded two goals and one assist. He scored in his first two Big East matches, including a game-winning goal against Providence.
Next up for the Golden Eagles is a match against Georgetown today in Washington, D.C.
- Skokie’s Clara Williamson led the Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s cross country team to a first-place finish at the 2012 Saint Mary’s University on Sept. 28 in Winona, Minn. Williamson, a Niles North High School graduate, was the top finisher for the Blugolds and placed third overall with a time of 24:34.9.
Eau Claire will compete next in the Brooks Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday in Winnconne, Wis.
- Niles native and Niles West High School graduate Daniel Niedezielski was named Division I Goalie of the Week for Sept. 24–30 by the NJCAA. The Oakton Community College goalkeeper shut out Prairie State College and had four saves in a 3-1 win against College of DuPage.
The Raiders (12-1 overall) are 6-0 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference this season, extending their unbeaten streak in conference contests to 34 games as of Monday. Oakton Community College was ranked No. 9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America junior college Division I poll released Oct. 2.
- A penalty kick from Winnetka’s Chris Ritter was the equalizer for his Northwestern men’s soccer team’s come-from-behind, double-overtime victory against Michigan State on Sept. 30 in East Lansing, Mich. The New Trier Township High School alumnus leads the Wildcats in scoring with 11 points in 11 games.
- In a 3-2 win against Maryland, Lyons graduate Megan Miller was one of four players with double-digit digs for Wake Forest. The Western Springs native led the way with 20 digs while playing in four sets.
The win was Miller and the Demon Decons’ first of the ACC season.
- Johnny Wingels of Wilmette committed to play hockey at Miami last week. Wingels’ brother, Tommy, also played at Miami and was drafted by the San Jose Sharks of the NHL (177th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft).
