SUMMIT — Coming into the 2012 postseason, Hinsdale South was looking to forget about last season’s early exit in the regional final.
The Hornets came close to repeating that disaster, but a late comeback capped a thrilling 25-27, 25-10, 25-23 victory at the Argo regional championship.
Appearing like they had the first game all but won at 24-21, all the Hornets had to do was score one point. Riverside-Brookfield had other plans though, as it staved off four match points, scored six of the next seven points and took the first set. The Bulldogs forced Hinsdale South into three errors in that final run before Emma Schander finished it with a kill.
“We just need to put our head in the game,” said Colleen Lyons. “We let that get away from us. We need to be better mentally.”
After that, the Hornets (30-7) came out looking like a team with something to prove and, after leading just 6-5, went on a 14-2 run to break game two wide open. Colleen Lyons had three kills in the decisive run, while Rachel Kent, Jessica Brezwyn and Jackie Adelphia each had two.
Game three was much like the first, a back-and-forth affair until two controversial calls gave the Hornets a six-point lead. But like the first game, the Bulldogs roared back from a 22-16 deficit to take a 23-22 advantage. The Hornets regained their composure this time, however, by creating a Riverside-Brookfield error and then Adelphia put away the game winner.
Brezwyn had a match-high 19 kills, while Lyons added 14.Allie Shumowsky powered seven kills for the Bulldogs (25-12). Hannah Claywell added five.
