Hinsdale South/Downers Grove South rallies from 3-goal hole, falls in shootout

DARIEN — Usually a team with a 1-7 record does not have a lot of fight left when things get rough.

But that was certainly not the case for the Hinsdale South/Downers South hockey club as it overcame a 5-2 third-period deficit only to fall short 2-1 in a penalty shootout after a 6-6 draw.

In a hard-fought battle in Darien on Saturday, Michael Tichy, who finished with two goals, tipped in a deflected puck with 1.8 seconds left in regulation to send it into a shootout. The goal was the fourth of the period for South (1-8).

After goals from Louis Palermo and Anthony Lenzi early in the period, a hard shot from Michael Basso with 10 minutes, 10 seconds remaining found the back of the net and tied the game at 5-5. Niko Ebbole scored what looked to be the game-winning goal for Bartlett with 1:20 left in the period.

In the shootout, only Basso converted for South.

“There’s a lot we can take away from this game,” said Tichy. “I think this is the best game we played all year and I like the way we fought back. I think that’s going to help us down the road.”

South faced a 3-0 deficit eight minutes into the second period before a goal from Riley Taylor — when he raced to a loose puck, spun around and shot in one motion from the blue line — kick-started South’s offense. A little over three minutes later, Tichy scored his first goal of the game, which cut Bartlett’s lead to 3-2.

“It disappointing that we didn’t come all the way back to win, but we’re happy we got this point. We can use this game as a confidence-builder moving forward,” said Palermo.
