DARIEN — Hinsdale Central swimming coach Corky King knows how difficult the Hinsdale South College Events Invitational is for teams, so he was pleased to see them enjoy earning the championship Saturday in Darien.
“It means a lot,” King said. “I don’t think we had more than three best times today, but we hovered around our times. It’s a brutal day with all the different longer distances. It’s fun to see the kids rise to the challenge and get after it.”
The Red Devils finished with 266 points to edge Barrington (259) in the 12-team field.
Barrington won five events, led by Jack Strauss, Sam Miseyka, Kyle Ujiiye and Sebastian Piekarski, who set a meet record in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay (1 minute, 28.20 seconds).
Ujiiye also won the 200 butterfly (1:59.81) and teamed with Piekarski, Nathan Bosse and Connor Kobida to take the 400 medley relay (3:41.11). Strauss finished first in the 100 free (47.81) and Sean Rodney won the 1,000 free (10:09.48).
“I was very pleased with the kids’ overall efforts and success in the water,” Barrington coach John Valentine said. “We really enjoy coming to this meet. It gives us a chance to not only showcase our strengths but it helps us as coaches to identify some of our weaknesses.”
Hinsdale Central received first-place performances from senior Connor Schroyer (50 free, 22.49) and Eddie Mapel (200 breaststroke, 2:16.50) and second-place efforts by sophomore Brian Portland (100 free, 49.46), Brogan O’Doherty, Mapel, Portland and Alex Cruz (400 medley relay, 3:43.50), and Schroyer, Brian Powell, Cruz and Portland (200 free relay, 1:31.18).
Deerfield, which placed ninth, took first and second in diving. Sean Scarry won the event with 365.75 points to top teammate Ryan Church (341.80).
Hinsdale South came in eighth and was led by senior Ryan O’Toole, who took fifth in the 1,000 free (10:38.43).
