Fenwick swimmers sweep tri, finish runnerup at Sandburg

OAK PARK — In a Jan. 8 tri-meet, the Fenwick swim team finished first with a score of 165, ahead of Benet (100) and St. Francis (18).

The 200 medley relay of Matt Farmer, Tommy McGuire, Cavan Smith and Derek Guillen finished first in 1:42.64. Zach Tieke won the 200 free with a time of 1:57. Tommy McGuire finished first in the 50 free in 22.64. Freshman Cavan Smith touched first in the 100 fly in 57.80.

The 200 free relay of Guillen, Hill, McGuire and Tieke won in 1:30.75. Matt Farmer came in first in the 100 back in 57.87. Connor Fabian placed first in the 100 breast in 1:06.52. And the 400 free relay team of Farmer, Guillen, McGuire and Tieke captured first in 3:26.15.

The Friars finished second at the Sandburg Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Fenwick took fourth in the medley relay in 1:42.03 with Farmer, McGuire, Smith and Tieke. McGuire was fourth in the 50 free in 22.92. Max Showalter won diving with 416.40, while David Durkin took fourth with 315.50. Tieke won the 100 free in 48.58, followed by Matt Bresnahan in fourth in 50.01.

The 200 free relay of Tieke, Guillen, Bresnahan and McGuire took runnerup (1:30.25) behind Sandberg (1:30.09). McGuire touched second in the 100 breast in 1:02.08, less than a second off the state cut; Connor Fabian took fifth in 1:04.28. In the 400 free relay, Bresnahan, Farmer, Guillen and Tieke came in fourth, and Bertschy, Hill, Mullen and Pyzdrowski took fifth.

The Fenwick divers competed at the Hinsdale Diving Invitational on Saturday, with Showalter fourth and Durkin 16th.
