OAK PARK — Oak Park-River Forest’s Nikita Bondarenko and Kyle Patnode were in perfect form at the Fenwick Sectional on Saturday, as each brought home a pair of individual titles in commanding fashion.
Bondarenko won the 500-yard freestyle by 17.62 seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 39.93 seconds and the 200 free by 2.95 seconds in 1:41.65.
“The main goal was qualifying for state so having a couple good times is just the cherry on top,” Bondarenko said. “You just go in, work on fine-tuning some skills, work on turns, just the small things. It’s just practice for state.”
Patnode swam to easy wins in the 100 fly (50.48), winning by 2.12 seconds, and the 100 backstroke (51.16), taking first by 3.45 seconds.
“This weekend was about making state and putting ourselves in good position for state,” Patnode said. “You try to be strong, quick through the walls. It’s just one of those steps you have to step up to for state.”
While Patnode and Bondarenko had the most dominant individual performances of the meet, Fenwick proved to be the deepest team as the Friars brought home the team title with 412 points to beat out the Huskies (387).
“It’s definitely special (winning) this year, being a captain and a senior,” said Justin White, who qualified for state in four events. “It’s the last meet in our pool so it feels great to take something home and remember it for a while.”
White qualified individually in the 200 free (2nd, 1:44.6) and the 100 free (3rd, 47.77). White was also part of two relay teams that qualified: the 200 free (1st, 1:25.59) and the 400 free (2nd, 3:09.41).
Other winners on the day were the OPRF 200 medley relay (1:34.44) and the 400 free relay (3:09.1); the Huskies’ Mark Hallman in the 100 free (47.01); Fenwick’s Jimmy Mullen in the 200 individual medley (1:59.89), Tommy McGuire in the 100 breaststroke (59.32) and Max Showalter in diving (423.5); and Riverside-Brookfield’s Quinn Risley in the 50 free (21.65).
