St. Joe roars past UIC Prep in Class 3A opener

WESTCHESTER — St. Joseph started slow in its regional opener against UIC College Prep, but once the Chargers got going there was no stopping them.
St. Joe’s led by just three points early in the second quarter but a combined 50 points in the second and third quarters was more than enough to propel the Chargers to a 90-40 win in the Class 3A St. Joseph Regional semifinals.
Leading the way for St. Joe’s was the trio of Jordan Ash (17 points), A.J. Patty (16) and Paul Turner (13).
“We kind of took them lightly in the beginning,” Ash said. “It happens, but we picked it up in the second quarter.”
UIC College Prep (18-11) was scrappy early on and only trailed 15-12 after a bucket by Darius Elmore with 7 minutes, 38 seconds to play in the second quarter.
The Chargers (16-11) stepped up their defensive effort and that resulted in a bunch of quick scores. St. Joe’s scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 36-18 lead into halftime.
The effort by the Chargers in the third quarter was even more impressive. Three 3-point plays by Turner fueled an 18-0 run. St. Joe’s scored 29 points in the period and led 65-26 heading to the fourth.
“We just had to help each other out,” Ash said. “We had to keep their guys in front of us. Then when we get in transition we can beat anyone.”
