WESTCHESTER — It took an extra four minutes, but St. Joseph was able to celebrate winning the Class 3A regional title on its’ own court Friday night after battling Westinghouse.
The Chargers fell behind in the overtime after turning the ball over twice, but they were able to rally and earn a 48-46 victory.
St. Joseph (17-12) will face St. Ignatius on Wednesday at the Nazareth Sectional.
A.J. Patty scored all nine of his points after halftime, including back-to-back baskets in the extra session that allowed the Chargers to erase a 44-42 deficit.
Paul Turner then sealed the victory for St. Joseph with a basket in the final seconds before Darius Mason hit two free-throws for Westinghouse to cut the margin to two points with six seconds left.
After a missed Chargers free-throw attempt, Westinghouse had a long desperation heave that fell short.
“I just wanted to win, it is my senior year,” Patty said. “I was not even looking to score. In the first half I was rushing it, but in the second half I calmed down and let the game come to me.
“I knew that we were the type of team that has the fight in them, so we were not going to give up.”
Turner led all scorers with 15 points, while sophomore Glynn Watson added 12 points for St. Joseph.
Westinghouse (13-8) trailed for most of the second half, but was able to force the overtime when Marlik Williams buried a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in regulation to tie the game at 42-42.
“It has been a great year for us,” Warriors coach Garland Williams said. “For four years we have played varsity basketball, and for four years these guys have shown improvement over every year we have been here.”
