ELMHURST — David Cohn and Charlie Rose combined for 48 points as York pulled away late to a 62-51 win over WSC Silver rival Lyons in a Class 4A York Regional semifinal on Wednesday.
For almost three quarters, Lyons (13-15) was able to control York (21-7) with an aggressive 2-3 half-court zone defense that kept the Dukes out of their comfort zone.
Then Dukes guard Rose stepped up. He scored seven straight points to give the Dukes an early 10-point fourth quarter lead.
“He (Rose) has been that way all season,” Dukes coach Vince Doran said. “He’s made some gargantuan shots for us all season.”
The Lions, facing a major deficit, were forced to play pressure defense. York guard Cohn took advantage and blitzed past the defenders with layups and free throws, scoring 14 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth.
“We like to get the ball in his (Cohn’s) hands. He can really stretch it out for us and make some great plays when we get some pressure,” Rose said.
Rose was close behind Cohn with 23 points and guard Jack Heinle finished with four points and 10 rebounds.
Guard Harrison Niego led the Lions with 14 points and guard Christopher O’Reilly was close behind with 12. Forward Sam Cybulski added nine points off the bench.
“The kids played their hearts out and I’m proud of them,” Lions coach Tom Sloan said. “We had them on the ropes for three quarters, but they showed why they’re a good team tonight.”
