GENEVA — Blood pressure rose as Lyons and AWFGM (Addison, Willowbrook, Fenton, Glenbard East, Montini) players geared up for Game 3 of the Cougar Cup Friday night in Geneva.
The Renegades calmed those nerves to take home the Cougar Cup with the 6-5 win.
“We weren’t supposed to win,” said assistant coach Dale Ohman, who took over after head coach Marc Pinto was suspended after Thursday night’s loss to Waubonsie. “I think we were more relaxed. I put no pressure on them, I said just go out and have fun. We weren’t supposed to win, which was even more fun.”
The Renegades also were missing three players due to suspensions from Thursday night’s contest.
“With nine players versus a full team, we overachieved big time,” Ohman said. “They’re a tremendous team, I give them credit, but we overachieved because they believe in each other and they never gave up, which made it really exciting.”
Lyons’ Joe Power gave the Lions the early lead when he found the back of the net with 11 minutes, 18 seconds left in the first period. AWFGM’s David Miceli responded 10 minutes later and the see-saw scoring began.
“We played hard, they played hard but we had heart,” said Miceli, who registered a hat trick, including the game-winner. “Since we were missing three guys, I knew I had to step up and play.”
Glenbard East senior Tommy Ohman scored two goals, including a tiebreaker with 4:58 left in the second.
“This has got to be the greatest feeling ever,” he said. “To play with these guys, this is by far the best team I’ve ever played with and to end my career this way winning this game, I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
He said the lack of pressure helped power the Renegades.
“We had that mentality like we’re not supposed to win,” he said. “We just relaxed and rolled with it. It makes a huge difference when you’re not supposed to win but it feels a lot better when you do.”
Charlie Malay, Jacob Soehlke and Samuel Brennan each scored for Lyons, while Power knocked in a second goal in the third. William Bauers also scored for the Renegades.
