Michael Smith scored a career-high 26 points as No. 24 Fenwick defeated previously unbeaten Rockford Auburn 63-50 in a second-round Proviso West Holiday Tournament, according to High School Cube News.

“He’s a veteran,” Malnati said. “I know he’s just a sophomore, but Jamal Nixon is a freshman, [junior guard] Kevin Owens has never been on this stage before and our other guards are hurt.”

Smith was strikingly efficient, scoring 10 points in the first half and doing his damage from both the field and the line in the second half. Just as important was his creativity and ability to direct the Friars’ attack.
