Boys basketball: Injury-plagued Providence falls to Fenwick

The wrong team won a Chicago Catholic League game between Fenwick and Providence Friday in New Lenox.

Fenwick held Providence to just one made field goal during an eight-minute span in the second half to gut out a 54-45 victory, pushing its records to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the CCL. Providence, playing without two starters because of injury, fell to 4-5, 1-3.

“We did gut it out and we’ll take it,” Fenwick coach Rick Malnati said. “Sometimes the wrong team wins and I think this was an instance of that. They just have a couple of guys hurt. Sometimes you are flat and we were flat for most of the game.”

Neither team led by more than three points during a nip-and-tuck first half.
