Several local boys basketball players stepped up with big performances over the holidays but only one team, Hinsdale South, actually won its tournament, according to High School Cube News.

TOP SCORERS: Hinsdale Central’s Matt Rafferty scored 31 points on Dec. 30 against New Trier at Proviso West. Also at Proviso West, Fenwick’s Mike Smith and St. Joseph’s Jordan Ash had 26-point games. Smith’s came against Rockford Auburn and Ash’s was against Proviso East in the quarterfinals. At Pontiac, Oak Park-River Forest’s Simmie Cobbs Jr. scored 24 points against Simeon in the semifinals.

BULL MARKET: When a role player such as senior forward Tyler Zampa scores a team-high 21 points, everything’s going right for Hinsdale South. Zampa did it in the DeKalb tournament championship game output. OPRF was third at Pontiac and Hinsdale Central won the sixth-place game at Proviso West to crack the HighSchoolCube Super 25. Fenwick cracked the Super 25 one week earlier before losing the fifth-place game at Proviso West.

BEAR MARKET: St. Joseph suffered its first two losses of the season to end the Proviso West tournament in fourth. Nazareth entered Proviso West with a 6-3 record, but went 1-2.
