"Max Hartzman has experienced some tough times the past two years of his Hinsdale Central football career, but things are finally turning around.
The starting center for the Devils recently received his first college scholarship offer from Colgate and is looking for more now that he can finally show his capabilities on the field. Over the summer, Hartzman visited several schools on the East Coast and is looking at Patriot League and Ivy League programs.
The 6-foot-2, 280-pound senior was one of the linemen who helped senior running back Ben Stefani set a team record Friday night. Stefani rushed 42 times for 173 yards at Oak Park-River Forest (7-1, 5-1). The previous mark of 41 carries was set by John Perkowski against Glenbard West in 2000.
Stefani scored a TD on his last touch, a 4-yard run with 2 minutes, 47 seconds remaining in the 28-10 loss.
Hartzman, a Hinsdale resident, and the Red Devils face a must-win game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Downers Grove North (5-3, 2-3 West Suburban Silver). The Devils (4-4, 2-3) need the victory to earn playoff consideration.
Hinsdale looks in good shape for an at-large bid with 42 playoff points, based on opponents’ wins, entering the game, while Downers North has 38."
