LA GRANGE PARK – Nazareth Academy stunned Benet Academy by defeating them 28 to 18 and completely altering the standings of the East Suburban Catholic Conference, High School Cube News reports. According to High School Cube,
"You never know quite what to expect from Nazareth this season.
The Roadrunners have one of the most unpredictable offenses around, shuttling three quarterbacks in and out of games along with a host of running backs.
And their results have been all over the map as well. Nazareth gave up 84 points in back-to-back games in September and was on the wrong end of a running clock vs. Joliet Catholic. But that all seems a long time ago now that the Roadrunners have thrown the East Suburban Catholic Conference race upside down by knocking off unbeaten teams two weeks in a row.
The Roadrunners’ latest victim was No. 7 Benet, which lost 28-18 Saturday afternoon in LaGrange Park.
That created a three-way tie for the ESCC lead among Benet, Joliet Catholic and Notre Dame, who all are 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Marist (4-3, 3-2) and Nazareth (5-2, 3-2) are right behind and St. Patrick (4-3, 2-2) also has climbed into contention.
It’s been a roller-coaster ride, Nazareth sophomore quarterback Carson Bartels admitted. “But now hopefully we’re just going up,” he said.
Bartels (5-for-7, 70 yards) helped keep the ride going in the right direction by throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to fellow sophomore Julian Love with 2:50 left in the game. That, plus a conversion run by freshman Ivory Kelly-Martin (20 carries, 50 yards), gave Nazareth a 25-18 lead."
