Hinsdale Central's track athletes came out with strong showings to start off the 2013 season. According to High School Cube News:
"Alexa Haff marveled at her own accomplishment Saturday.
In her first varsity meet, the Hinsdale Central freshman raced to a victory at the Hornet/Red Devil invitational at Katherine Legge Memorial Park. The field featured several of the state's top teams, including Glenbard West, Palatine, Naperville Central and New Trier.
Haff, a relative unknown among the sport's followers, held off two talented runners down the home stretch to cross the line in 17 minutes, 29.88 seconds. New Trier junior Mimi Smith followed in second in 17:34.10, and Glenbard West sophomore Lindsay Graham took third in 17:35.06.
"This is a big surprise to me," Haff said. "I did not think I'd do this well at all. I had no idea.
"I just wanted to do my best."
Paced by senior Liz Cox, who was sixth in 18:16.21, Palatine won the team title with 59 points, edging out Glenbard West, which totaled 61 points. Naperville Central took third (86) and New Trier finished fourth (90).
In the boys race, Hinsdale Central senior Billy Magnesen easily won the title in 14:50.50, which was nearly 13 seconds faster than Highland Park senior Angel Estrada's runner-up time of 15:03.18."
