The Catholic League wrestling meet is Saturday at Mount Carmel and Fenwick’s Mike Kozyra is already preparing for a long-awaited rematch.

When coaches seed the tournament, the top two 170 pounders are expected to be undefeated Bishop McNamara sophomore Kyle Betourne and Kozyra, a senior from Elmwood Park ranked No. 2 in Class 2A by Illinoismatmen.com. Betourne is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A. Betourne defeated Kozyra by fall in their only previous meeting during a dual meet Dec. 21 at Fenwick.

Kozyra has only three losses on the season. He suffered his first when Glenbard West’s Colin Knowlton won 5-2 Nov. 27 just a few days after Kozyra ended the football season as Fenwick’s starting linebacker. Kozyra missed most of the wrestling preseason while the football Friars advanced to the Catholic League semifinals and the second round of the IHSA’s Class 7A playoffs against Wheaton North.

Kozyra is considered one of the toughest athletes in the school. He finished second on Fenwick’s football team with 70 tackles behind fellow linebacker Jack Rafferty, who recorded 95 tackles.
