If icy temperatures don’t send a shiver down your spine this cold season, winter heating bills might.
The federal Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the Department of Energy, predicted in early October that Midwest natural gas bills could spike by up to 13 percent compared with last winter. Although individual Illinois gas utility predictions vary, one thing is clear: We can’t rely on the weather — or the utilities — to cut our energy costs.
That’s why Citizens Utility Board traveled the state recently to spread the word about nearly $37 million in annual energy efficiency incentives available to Illinois consumers.
Utilities such as Ameren, ComEd, Nicor, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas offer a wide range of rebates, discounts and other incentives. They include up to $1,000 off an energy efficient furnace and air conditioner, home energy audits for as low as $49 (up to $500 value), and automatic discounts on energy efficient light bulbs, to name a few.
It’s Citizens Utility Board’s mission to cut your utility costs. That’s why we created our Guide to Illinois Energy Efficiency Incentives, at www.CitizensUtilityBoard.org/EnergyEfficiencyGuide. It’s a one-stop-shop to find out what money-saving opportunities are available for your household.
Energy efficiency is the best weapon against high heating bills, so stop shivering and start saving this winter.
