EAGLES is a year-round, community-based program that incorporates therapeutic recreation to help young adults with developmental disabilities Enhance Adult Growth through Lifestyle Education and Service. This daily program emphasizes leisure independence, community outings, and social interaction with peers.
The program was initiated in 2008 at the Darien location with four participants. Over five years, the program has expanded to 45 participants, while staff has grown from its three original members to eight.
EAGLES has added a second location at the Brookfield Municipal Building, with a third location in Lisle in the developmental stages. The EAGLES program has received the Outstanding Program Award presented by Illinois Parks and Recreation Association, and has become a model for other special recreation agencies who are implementing their own similar programs. EAGLES participants cheered each other on as each was introduced and had the opportunity to address the group.
Camaraderie and support are key components of the program, and the participants’ enthusiasm was evident to all in attendance.
The celebration also included a special good-bye to Laura Christensen, who had been the EAGLES Program Coordinator for the last five years, and who helped with the formation of the program.
