An unlikely hero rescues a princess in Stage Door Fine Arts’ production of “Shrek the Musical” at The Community House, 415 W. 8th St., Hinsdale. The cast includes ninety third-graders through college students.

“We chose ‘Shrek’ because there’s lots of parts,” said director Don Smith. “As an educational theater, it’s important to find shows that give as many opportunities to the actors as possible.”

Smith said it’s also a great production for families to see. “It’s based on the first DreamWorks motion picture of ‘Shrek,’” he said. “And it’s awesome visually. There’s amazing costumes with all the fairy tale characters you could imagine coming to life onstage. The set is all video animation.”

In addition, Smith believes that the story offers an important message for kids: “Not to judge people and see the true beauty inside.”

Performances are 7 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 31-Feb. 9. Tickets are $18.
