Naper Settlement’s Oktoberfest is a two-day event but there’s a focus on families, noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. You and your children can take a miniature train ride around the settlement at 523 S. Webster St. in Naperville or go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt.
Kids can work on scarecrow and Conestoga wagon coloring pages, do leaf rubbings, make a cornstalk and create foam candy corn necklaces, among other activities.
Marketing and sales representative Donna DeFalco reported that the Joe Naper pumper will be on display from 3-5 p.m. Purchased in 1874, it was the City of Naperville’s first piece of firefighting equipment. Other firefighting equipment will also be exhibited during those hours in celebration of Fire Prevention Month and Firefighters Appreciation Day. Kids can try on pint-size firefighting gear, including hats, coats and boots.

INTO THE WOODS
Little kids might find the creepy characters and strobe lights too frightening, but children 10 and older will love being taken through Oak Brook Park District’s Haunted Forest, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12, at Central Park, 1500 Forest Gate Road. Other activities include a pumpkin patch, face painting, candy in the haystack and a craft corner. Cost is $1 per ticket, $20 for 25 tickets.

Children ages 2 and 3 will work on craft activities at Toddler Art, 10:30-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at the Hinsdale Public Library, 20 E. Maple St. Miss Anne will guide the toddlers and their caregivers. Registration is required.

THE FORCE WILL BE WITH THEM
A costume parade will be the highlight of Star Wars Reads Day at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Oak Brook Barnes and Noble, 297 Oakbrook Center, so have your children dress in their Star Wars best. Kids will hear I Want to Be a Jedi by Simon Beecroft and What Is a Wookiee by Laura Buller and Kate Simkins.
