Family Friendly: Treasures from stones and gemstones

Visitors to the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art on Nov. 16 will get an up-close look at how stones and gems can be used to create a variety of objects.
A variety of techniques for polishing and cutting stones and gem will be on display at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art on Nov. 16.

Visitors to the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art know that many stunning decorative items can be created out of stones and gemstones. You and your children will learn how it’s done during Lapidary Day, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the museum, 220 Cottage Hill Ave., Elmhurst.

“We do demonstrations of a number of techniques relative to lapidary,” said Karen Dave, a member of the West Suburban Lapidary Club who helps arrange this annual free event. These include beading, silversmithing, cabochon cutting (a technique used on opaque stones), wire wrapping and faceting.

Each year, Dave reported, “We have some type of stone- or jewelry-related activity that’s oriented for kids.” This year, children will decorate picture frames with stones and other materials.

There will also be free jewelry cleaning.

“We enjoy demonstrating our various crafts to the public,” Dave said. “We enjoy doing it and we really like to share it. We welcome all questions.”
