Your children, ages 2-10, will learn how to attract and feed brilliantly colored butterflies at Monarch Madness, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Children’s Garden at the Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle.
“We’re going to have a display on the lawn of our Children’s Garden with some live Monarch caterpillars,” said Children’s Garden program coordinator Krista Childs. “We’ll be making seed balls with soil, compost and seeds. We’re going to use milkweed seeds, which attract Monarch butterflies.”
There will be information on the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly as well as samples of milkweed, which Monarchs eat.
“Kids should learn about Monarch butterflies because they are an important pollinator, they’re beautiful and, for the last two years, their population has been in decline, so we should learn ways to help them,” Childs said.
The event is free with museum admission.
