BURR RIDGE — The Kupetis family of Burr Ridge enjoys long bike rides and visits to nearby parks. So the Burr Ridge Community Park Foundation’s Pedal the Park event, coming up in September, fits right in.
“We go to Harvester Park a lot,” said Holly Kupetis, mom to Ava, 4, and 1-year-old Alexa.
On Sept. 8 the family, including dad, Michael, will join other teams, families and riders in the Burr Ridge Park Foundation’s first pedal-powered tour of Burr Ridge’s parks.
Riders will start their 10-mile trek at Harvester Park before making their way to Stevens, Palisades and Whittaker parks.
Mary Harrell, president of the foundation, said money raised will help to further improve the park district’s pool and splash pad. She said the foundation also sets aside money to be used by families who cannot afford park programs.
“We’re really excited about the event,” said Harrell, who said the ride is designed to appeal to families as well as more serious bicyclists.
Kupetis said there was a time when 10 miles was just a short outing for her and her husband. And although it could be a challenge to pull a trailer full of kids through town, she’s looking forward to it.
“It sounds like fun,” she said.
Food and entertainment await those who complete the park tour. Back at Harvester Park, Great American Bagel will provide bagels and cream cheese, Brookhaven Marketplace will supply fruit and the Paul Halloran family of Burr Ridge will donate breakfast bars.
Case New Holland of Burr Ridge is the event’s major sponsor. The company will provide each rider with a backpack containing water and a punch card. Those who have their card punched at each of the four parks will be entered into a drawing to win a new bicycle.
That new bike will make next year’s ride even better for one lucky rider.
“We do hope to make this an annual event,” Harrell said.
