From September 26 to October 20, Cirque du Soleil’s latest breathtaking spectacle Amaluna will set up its Big Top on the North parking lot of the Mall of America in Bloomington. This production highlights the athletic dancing, beautiful music, dreamlike sets and fanciful costumes that have made Cirque du Soleil famous throughout the world. For the first time in Cirque du Soleil history, the band features an all-female ensemble of musicians, and nearly three out of four performers are women.
Here is a closer look at Amaluna:
Amaluna takes place on a hidden island whose rhythms are attuned to the cycles of the moon and controlled by a council of goddesses led by queen Prospera. The show chronicles the story of the budding love between Prospera’s daughter and a young man who finds himself shipwrecked on the island after one of Prospera’s epic magical storms.
The performers’ costumes in Amaluna feature designs based on historic clothing with a 21st century twist. Deconstructed designs from the Italian renaissance feature fiberglass, metallic paper and denim, while voluminous robes features prints of images from nature and deep space. Though some of the garments are long and flowing, none impede the performers’ athletic movements.
For the duration of the show, the area below the big top is transformed into the fanciful wooded island of Amaluna. Artificial trees circle the stage, while bamboo-like branches and limbs stretch up towards the canopy above. A water bowl at the center of the stage changes colors and provides a visual vortex where performers accomplish breathtaking acrobatic feats.
