On March 18, Mall of America celebrated the beginning of a 5.6 million square foot expansion with a groundbreaking ceremony. MOA is already the leading attraction in the state of Minnesota, and this expansion is expected to bring even more visitors to enjoy the largest shopping mall in the United States. Read on for a closer look at what this expansion will bring to shoppers at MOA.
Phase II by the numbers
More than 20,000 square feet of space will be dedicated to events such as community functions and celebrity appearances. The whole expansion will be a multi-level project connecting to the existing four floors of the mall space.
Stores and attractions to expect
Much of the expansion will be dedicated to higher-end services to draw in customers from households with annual income of $100,000 or more. Therefore, you can expect to see more high-end retailers, spas and restaurants. The new section of the mall will even include lodging with a 342-room JW Marriott and 7-story office building. Longer-term projects included in the expansion will include the state’s largest water park and skating rink as well as a state-of-the-art movie theatre. Parking will be increased to accommodate these new businesses with more than 8,000 new spaces and underground valet parking.
Economic impact of expansion
Once completed, Phase II is expected to bring in 20 million more visitors to the MOA, which is an increase of nearly 60%. The economic impact for the state is estimated at $4.3 billion.
